Where they overlap
Both give you the texture of worn tape and aged vinyl — noise, wobble, saturation, degradation. RC-20 routes your signal through six effect modules in series: Noise, Wobble, Saturation, Degrader, Reverb, and Volume Drops. It is the most popular lo-fi plugin in its category for a reason — its preset library is deep and the character it adds to drums, samples, and full mixes is convincing and quick.
Nessie covers the same lo-fi vocabulary — saturation, wow and flutter, vinyl noise, bit and rate reduction — so on drums, loops, and samples the two land in similar territory.
Where RC-20 Retro Color wins
Cross-platform. RC-20 runs on macOS in AU and AAX in addition to Windows VST3. If your studio moves between operating systems, or you collaborate with engineers on Mac or in Pro Tools, RC-20 works everywhere. Nessie is Windows-only right now.
Reverb and volume drops. RC-20 includes a Space reverb module and a Volume Drops module that recreates the way worn tape loses output irregularly. Nessie has neither. If that spatial depth and unpredictable dropout is part of your sound, RC-20 is the more complete toolkit.
